Each year, the TASH Conference brings together our constituents to share resources and success stories, learn about field-driven best practices, and network within a community engaged in shared values. The Conference is attended by passionate leaders, experts, and advocates from every corner of the disability community. Conference attendees are influential in their fields and communities, and play an important role in the provision of services and supports for individuals and organizations around the world; and include professors and researchers from leading institutions; those involved in local, state, and federal governments and public policy; special and general educators, and school administrators; self-advocates, adult service providers; students, family members, and many others. This year’s conference theme is Liberty and Justice for All.

This qualitative study interviewed 17 special education teachers from a large urban school district in the Midwest to identify classroom practices that are in use for students with intellectual disability and identify practices that align with SAMHSA’s six principles of trauma-informed practices. Teachers ranged from preschool through high school and included teachers in both self-contained and co-taught settings. The study used an inductive coding strategy and thematic analysis to analyze the data. Classroom practices that were described by participants were identified as belonging within one of the six principles of trauma-informed practice (safety; trustworthiness and transparency; peer support; collaboration and mutuality; empowerment, voice, and choice; cultural, historical, and gender issues), neutral practices, and not trauma-informed practices. Results also include reflection on the participants’ beliefs about whether their practices are trauma-informed.
